First grade is a fun and exciting year. We look forward to working with you and your children. As we embark on this year's journey, we anticipate a successful year full of learning, hard work and fun. Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions or concerns about your child.

School Policies:

Students must have a written note if there is a change in transportation, or you may call the office by 2:30 at 516-733-2301.

Absent and late notes are required on the day your child returns to school.

Please be on time, and keep absences to a minimum so work is not missed.

Lunch and Snack:

Students may bring in lunch from home or buy lunch.

If your child is buying lunch, please send money in an envelope labeled with your child's name.

Please pack a healthy snack separately from lunch for your child. Children should have a small bottle of water for snack – please refrain from sending in juice boxes for snack.

The students will make a Birthday Book for the birthday child in the classroom. Food is not permitted to celebrate birthday parties.

Birthday invitations are not allowed to be passed out in class unless there is one for each child.

Extra Help:

Extra help will be held two times per week and begins at 8:05. Children will be invited by invitation only. Transportation is not provided for extra help classes.

Curriculum Guide:

In first grade phonics, sight words, reading fluency and comprehension are major components of reading acquisition.

Please make sure to read and practice the sight words each night to reinforce these skills.

Homework Policy:

Homework will be assigned Monday-Thursday. Each week a homework calendar will be sent home explaining your child's homework. As part of your child's weekly homework, they are required to read for 15 minutes each night and hand in a monthly reading log.
