Dear Hicksville High School Community,

The Nassau County Department of Health has notified the District that an individual associated with the school community has been diagnosed with Tuberculosis. The person is under the supervision of healthcare professionals and is receiving appropriate medical treatment. The health department has advised us to notify parents with children in school.

Tuberculosis (TB) is an airborne bacterial disease that usually affects the lungs. If left untreated, TB may lead to serious illness. Persons with active TB are most likely to spread the bacteria to close contacts (individuals they spend prolonged time with), such as family members. Health Department officials are in the process of contact tracing and will notify parents/guardians/staff if they determine an individual is a close contact and needs an evaluation.

If you would like further information regarding TB, you may want to review https://www.cdc.gov/tb/publications/faqs/default.htm. If an individual is concerned that a child has symptoms, they should contact their healthcare provider.

While the Department of Health has not recommended any additional precautions for students or staff, we want to remind our school community to practice good health hygiene and follow recommended health guidelines, such as regular handwashing (wash hands often with soap and water for 20 seconds, especially after using the bathroom and before eating. If soap and water are not readily available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60%
